| The Society holds funds for two memorial lectures. The first of these is the John French Memorial Lecture named in honour of the Oxford-based pathologist, Dr John French, who made seminal observations and contributions to the field of cardiovascular pathology and who died prematurely in 1960. For more information about Dr French, click here. The lecture is given by a younger UK-based investigator who is considered by the organisers to be a rising star in atherosclerosis research. Recent lecturers include Naveed Sattar, Professor of Metabolic Medicine at the University of Glasgow; Mark Kearney, Professor of Cardiology at the University of Leeds; and Jon Gibbins, Executive Director of Research (Biomolecular Sciences) at the University of Reading. This talk is given in Oxford, following selection by the BAS committee, and is accompanied by a small prize. The John French Lecturer automatically becomes a member of the BAS. The lecture given in the Autumn meeting is the Hugh Sinclair Memorial Lecture. This honours the memory of one of the founding members of the Atherosclerosis Discussion Group, Dr Hugh Sinclair, who made many outstanding and novel contributions regarding the influence of dietary factors on the risk of atherosclerosis. For more information about Dr Sinclair, click here. Traditionally this lecture is given by a national or international figure of high standing. Recent speakers include Professor Peter Libby from Harvard University and Dr Gerard Evan, then of the ICRF. Both lecturers are invited to prepare a review of their talk, which is submitted for publication in the journal Atherosclerosis. The most recent and highly successful innovation has been the introduction of a Young Investigator’s Award. This was initially sponsored by a donation from Bristol Myers Squibb but from 2002 this award has been adopted by the British Heart Foundation, who have named the award in honour of one of the Society’s most outstanding atherosclerosis researchers and recent Assistant Medical Director of the BHF, Professor Michael Davies. For more information about Prof Davies click here. The competition is held at the Society’s spring meeting and is judged, by the committee, on both scientific quality and presentation. This has rapidly become a highlight of the spring meeting and is attracting an ever-increasing number of submissions. |
